Understanding Advanced Directives & Living Wills

Most of us don’t expect a time when we won’t be able to speak for ourselves—but planning for that possibility is one of the most important gifts we can give to ourselves and the people we love.

An advance directive is a written document that outlines your healthcare preferences if you are unable to communicate them. It helps guide medical providers and loved ones in making decisions that align with your values and wishes.

A living will is part of that directive and focuses on the types of medical care you would or would not want—especially in serious or life-limiting situations.

You can also choose a healthcare proxy—a trusted person who can speak on your behalf and make medical decisions if you are unable to do so.

These documents can become part of your medical record and are generally recognized across states, helping ensure your wishes are honored wherever you receive care. It’s important to keep a copy on hand and share it with your healthcare proxy and medical team so your voice is always represented.

Why It Matters

Without clear guidance, loved ones are often left to make difficult decisions during emotional and stressful moments. This can lead to confusion, uncertainty, and even conflict.

Having your wishes clearly documented:

  • ensures your voice is honored, even when you can’t speak
  • reduces stress and burden on your loved ones
  • provides clarity and direction during medical decision-making
  • allows you to maintain a sense of control and dignity

A Thoughtful, Supportive Process

This isn’t about expecting the worst—it’s about creating clarity, peace of mind, and alignment with what matters most to you.

You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Together, we can take the time to talk through your values, preferences, and choices—at a pace that feels comfortable and supportive.
